Bollywood These Days
The new Hindi movies these days have come of age. Not only are the new directors and producers exploring topics that are different than the masala movies of the past, but are also aggressively experimenting and updating the technology used for the making of the movies.
Well, innovation in the field of movie making has always been a factor that has pulled the audience to the movie theaters even though, which is especially true for the Bollywood movies, the theme of the movie is often well known. The Hindi movies have always had songs with the lead actors romancing in a park and then getting soaked up in the rain or a shower. The surprise used to be when a movie did not end up in a chase and fight scene with the hero ultimately winning over the bad guys! Even when such was the case, the directors and producers did make the best use of the movie making technology. After the era of the black and white movies, improvements in the sound recording took a massive leap. The directors started including stunt shots that often became the selling points for a new Hindi movie.
The directors of the Hindi movies have often been criticized of copying Hollywood movies and in some cases the criticism was truly valid. However, learning from what others have done and improving upon it is how the world evolves. If everyone starts inventing his own wheel, we would still be in the Stone Age.
Some of the people in the new Hindi movie industry are worth a mention for their immense contribution to the world of cinema. Just a few decades ago, RD Burman had proven his charismatic style of music by experimenting with and delivering great examples of not only the Indian classical music style or a more contemporary music style but also the one that blended the two with his own styles making his melodies immortal. In the modern days, I think AR Rehman has used technology and innovation and raised the bar that was set by RD Burman, even higher. His renditions in the movie Jodha Akbar are great examples of his own imagination and the use of the technology.
Rakesh Roshan is one of those producers and directors who has tried with new story lines and technology. He is lucky to even have a son, Hrithik Roshan, who can act and dance like no other in the whole Bollywood movies industry. Together, they have made very successful movies like Koi Mil Gaya and its sequel where Rakesh used technology to his advantage and proved that the Hindi movies are no less than any other movies around the world when it comes to using the modern technology for movie making.
Where the leaders in the Bollywood world have made their marks, there are also scores of almost unknown new budding directors that have produced movies with penny budgets and have had successes that brought back millions in returns. These directors have given a chance to the totally unknown set of actors and actresses changing the concept that only the well-known actors can make a movie successful. Such a trend can even make the Bollywood hero worship a thing of the past!
The new Hindi movies, from my perspective, are getting more and more exciting to watch from the perspective of innovation, imagination, trend setting and the use of technology. Bollywood has a great future ahead for those who dare to dream and change the world of new Hindi movies.
